Churches in Frankfurt (Oder)

When you walk through Frankfurt / Oder, you will especially notice the churches of the city. In 1253, Margrave Johann I gave Frankfurt / Oder its town charter. As a result, the construction of several churches began, which can still be admired in the city today.

if you are in Hotel City Residence Before you start into the city, you should visit the St. Marien Church, the former main parish church. It was built in 1253 in the typical North German brick Gothic style, but was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. The church has been rebuilt since 1979 and is now a cultural center. The medieval glass paintings in the church are particularly worth seeing. In 2002, three large window paintings came back from St. Petersburg, telling scenes from the Bible on 117 panes.

The Friedenskirche is located on the Untermarkt, the oldest stone building in the city, the foundations of which already existed when the city was founded. Today the "Ecumenical Europe Center" is being built here and the church can be used for events.

The concert hall "Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach" used to be a church. Services were held in the Franciscan monastery church from the mid-16th century until the city began converting the church into a concert hall in 1967. Today the building is a sight worth seeing with bronze gates at the entrances.

In addition, the Sankt Gertraud Church, the Sankt Georg Church and the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche are in the city area and can be visited during a visit to the Hotel City Residence. Gilded bronze chandeliers and the high altar with paintings and carved figures are worth seeing in the neo-Gothic Sankt Gertraud church. The Sankt-Georg-Kirche is an architectural highlight. The church is a circular building made of clinker-faced reinforced concrete with an attached south tower and is reminiscent of the typical construction of the 1920s.

Churches, like the Viadrina University and Heinrich von Kleist, are part of the history of Frankfurt / Oder and have shaped the cityscape and cultural life in the border town to this day. Therefore, a detour to the churches is recommended when visiting the city.
